That’s very interesting quote from Dinesh D’Souza. Is there more to the quote? Both southern Democrats and Republicans were slave holders. During that time period, the parties were not split Conservative/Liberal – rather they were separated North and South.
Northerners were more or less, the liberal branch of the party and the Southerners were the Conservative portion of the party. During that time, the church defended slavery and pointed to Scripture.

You have heard the term Dixiecrat, I presume. Conservative’s who were unhappy with the Democratic party decided to change party affiliation and moved to the Republican party.
So while Dinesh D’Souza is partially right, the people he is pointing out are actually members of the the party he currently supports.
